For the first time, key players in the travel sector have criticized the Balearic government’s latest tourism decree, saying it fails to address the island’s deepening housing crisis and unchecked tourist saturation.

Fiol, a leading industry figure, argued that short-term holiday rentals are often used by tourists who can’t afford hotel stays—something he claims contributes to a “low-quality” tourism offering. He also warned that the current model is fueling an unsustainable cycle where excessive accommodation options continue to drive up tourist demand.

In 2024, the Balearic Islands hit a new tourism record with 15.3 million visitors, reflecting a 6.15% surge from the previous year—further straining the island’s infrastructure and housing availability.
